Communication and data are essential in the security industry, especially when a debriefing takes place after an incident. A security guard who has just been under attack often finds it difficult to remember all the details of an event and often only have incomplete notes to fall back on, so clear photos taken on location at the time of the incident can add a lot of value to the forensic investigation.

Here are a few tips on how to ensure that photos are always available and that these photos are of sufficient quality:

  • Ensure that your guards are equipped with bodycams that are worn in a dedicated vest. This frees your guard up to concentrate fully on the incident at hand, rather than having to fiddle with camera technology in the heat of the moment.
  • Label all vests clearly so they indicate that they feature mobile camera surveillance technology. This will act as a deterrent to criminals in the area.
  • Invest in high quality cameras that record in HD so that all footage is sharp and detailed. This makes it easier to identify and recognize perpetrators involved.
  • Check that the body-worn camera specification has a wide field of view without distortion.
  • Test the camera battery endurance life. It is recommended that the battery supports at least 20 hours standby with a healthy 14 hours of video operation to cover adequately a 12 hour shift. This is critical as many cameras run flat after just 4 – 6 hours, thus compromising the intended purpose.
  • State-of-the-art camera equipment provides a significant advantage, but only if this equipment is suitable for the conditions, is durable and doesn’t require handling by guards under fire.
